Flood Damage from a Bad Storm? Three Steps to Get Your Home Back to Normal

If you have any type of flood damage, you need to take the proper steps to get everything taken care of before the water causes more damage. To help you, below are three steps to get you started so you can start living in your home again.

Contact Your Insurance Company

You need to contact your insurance company immediately. They will ask you in detail about all damage done to your home, as well as the property.

Be careful in what you tell the insurance company. For example, do not immediately say all damage was due to the actual flood water. What you say will be documented and can determine what, if anything, will be paid for your claim. Just tell the company you have water damage inside your home. Also consider damage outside, such as to your landscaping and gardening equipment.

Send an Insurance Adjuster

The insurance company will send an insurance adjuster to your home to evaluate all damage. One of the first things the adjuster will do is determine if the damage was caused by the water or if the wind caused any damage, such as blown off shingles on the roof. This is important because if you do not have flood insurance, then anything the insurance adjuster deems as damage caused by water from the storm will not be covered under your insurance plan.

There are some factors that may cause the insurance company to pay part of your claim, such as how your home was flooded. For example, part of the water may have come from damaged plumbing pipes, such as pipes bursting due to the wind. In a case like this, the insurance company should cover damage caused by this water.

Hire a Flood Damage Restoration Company

Contact a flood damage restoration company, such as Disaster Professionals, as soon as possible. This is because the sooner they start drying out your home, the better. They will first determine how much damage there is. For example, the restoration company will check carpeting. If the water is only on the surface of the carpet and has not gotten down into the padding the carpet may be able to be saved.

Getting things dried out quickly will also help prevent mold and mildew from growing in your home. Mold and mildew can be hard to clean, and the spores get into the air causing health problems for you and your family.

The flood damage company will use industrial fans to help dry things out, as well as special vacuums to suck water out of the flooring or anywhere else there is standing water.
